Message from the Chief Residents

Welcome! We are excited that you are interested in the Anesthesia Residency Program at University of Texas Health San Antonio and would love to highlight some of the special features about our program.

UT Health San Antonio is located in the South Texas Medical Center and provides care for patients coming from all regions of South Texas. As an anesthesia resident here, you will have the opportunity to serve a diverse population of patients with access to multiple clinical training sites. Our primary training location is University Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center. At UH we care for complex patients with a multitude of various disease processes and injuries. The vast clinical experience we receive here strengthens our medical knowledge and decision-making ability when caring for sick patients and prepares us well for practice beyond residency.

Audie Murphy Veterans Affairs Hospital is one of the largest government hospitals in the nation. From our intern year to CA-3 year, we rotate at the VA in both the operating rooms as well as in the SICU. So much can be learned from caring for the heroes of our nation and we are very fortunate to have this clinical site included in our training.

Other clinical sites include our chronic interventional pain clinic, the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, the Robert B. Green Hospital, and our outpatient dental school facility. These locations give us the opportunity to practice anesthesia in both an outpatient and private hospital environment.

While our clinical training is robust, one of the greatest strengths of our program is the experience that you will gain here. We strongly believe that a firm foundation of medical knowledge in combination with clinical experience and sound decision-making creates a competent and successful anesthesiologist.

In addition to our robust clinical experience, anesthesia residents have an opportunity to pursue an accelerated MBA program during their time in residency. This program is a full-time program with classes offered on weekday evenings, after normal working hours, or on weekends for a duration of approximately two years.   At a fraction of the cost, the MBA offered at UTSA consists of a core curriculum that covers various areas of business administration such as accounting, applied statistics, human resources, business communication, business ethics, business law, business strategy, finance, managerial economics, entrepreneurship, marketing, supply-chain management, and much more.  We pride ourselves with equipping our trainee’s with both the clinical and administrative knowledge they need to succeed.

However, our greatest strength is in the special individuals who work here! Our faculty and residents take pride in what they do and strive to make a difference every day. The family environment created by this network makes the program what it is.

Thank you again for your interest in our program. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions you have and best of luck in the application process. We look forward to hopefully meeting you soon!
