{"id":1667,"date":"2021-11-24T11:20:21","date_gmt":"2021-11-24T17:20:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/anesthesiology\/?page_id=1667"},"modified":"2024-11-11T19:57:20","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T01:57:20","slug":"liver-transplant-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/anesthesiology\/education\/liver-transplant-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"Liver Transplant Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1668 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/145\/2021\/11\/ourmission_400x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Anesthesiology provides a one-year, non-ACGME accredited fellowship in liver transplant anesthesiology.\u00a0 It is designed to enable the fellow to acquire the knowledge and skills to effectively care for patients undergoing liver transplantation and with end-stage liver disease.\u00a0 We perform approximately 120 adult liver transplants per year with about 45 being living-donor liver transplants.<\/p>\n<p>As part of intraoperative management, the fellow will be exposed to transesophageal echocardiography, continuous renal replacement therapy, veno-venous bypass, and viscoelastic testing.\u00a0 In addition to intraoperative management, the fellow will gain experience in all aspects of the patient\u2019s care including preoperative evaluation, consultation, and listing, as well as postoperative care in the ICU.\u00a0 There is also exposure to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.\u00a0 There will be an emphasis on the management of living donor transplantation donors and recipients.<\/p>\n<p>Rotations will include experience in the blood bank with transfusion medicine, the transplant ICU, transesophageal echocardiography and point of care ultrasound, and the hepatology clinic.\u00a0 Since the fellowship is not ACGME accredited, when not working in transplant cases the fellow will be supervising cases as faculty and will be compensated as such.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;]\n            <div class=\"panel   match-panels\" >\n                \n                <div><p>Our program will be participating in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and National Residency Match Program (NRMP) for the 2023-2024 fellowship class.
