The goals of the rotation are to teach the student the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ASA classification of patient&#8217;s physical status<\/li>\n<li>The actions and side effects of common preoperative medications<\/li>\n<li>How to select the appropriate mode of anesthesia for the surgical procedure<\/li>\n<li>The rationale for the establishment of peripheral and central venous access<\/li>\n<li>How to identify common sites for central venous access<\/li>\n<li>The placement of peripheral access<\/li>\n<li>Appropriate intraoperative intravenous fluid and electrolyte therapy<\/li>\n<li>Intraoperative monitoring<\/li>\n<li>Proper airway and ventilator management during general anesthesia<\/li>\n<li>The methods to induce and maintain general anesthesia<\/li>\n<li>The skill to position and pad the unconscious patient<\/li>\n<li>The actions and side effects of common medications used during general anesthesia<\/li>\n<li>The skill to monitor the depth of anesthesia<\/li>\n<li>The uses and limitations of regional anesthesia<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate skill in the postoperative management after general anesthesia<\/li>\n<li>The diagnosis and treatment of anesthetic complications<\/li>\n<li>The risks of anesthetic agents in patients with cardiopulmonary disease and methods to minimize these risks<\/li>\n<li>The uses and limitations of local anesthetic agents<\/li>\n<li>The methods of pain relief after surgical procedures<\/li>\n<li>The actions and side effects of common medications used for pain control<\/li>\n<li>How cigarette cessation, weight loss and control of blood pressure positively affect general anesthesia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; el_class=&#8221;panel&#8221;]Application for the MS III rotation is processed through surgery and available to University of Texas at San Antonio UT San Antonio students only.
