Excellence in Medical Education Student Leaders Grant Program

The Long School of Medicine (LSOM) Excellence in Medical Education Student Leaders Program will fund Long School of Medicine (LSOM) student organizations to advance initiatives aligned with the Office of Academic Opportunity and Educational Excellence’s mission of increasing academic opportunities for prospective students as well as enhancing current student learning opportunities and professional development.

The program’s primary objective is to foster the career enhancement of LSOM student group leaders through developing and implementing initiatives and programs to enrich educational prospects for prospective or current students and promote health equity in South Texas. By engaging in a collaborative effort involving the student group, our office, and other designated stakeholders, we anticipate cultivating a shared commitment to advancing excellence in medical education. This initiative offers leadership opportunities by fostering a proactive role for LSOM students in driving professional growth through hands-on experience in program development.

Proposals should focus on one or more of the following areas:

  • The recruitment of South Texas pre-medical students to apply and enroll in the LSOM
  • The development of responsive tutoring and peer mentoring programs for current LSOM students
  • Fostering LSOM student wellness and engagement
  • Highlighting and addressing South Texas health disparities

Program Guidelines

  • Proposals must be submitted by a member in good standing from an LSOM student organization and approved by that organization’s leader.
  • Two or more student organizations may collaborate on a proposal and share an award.
  • Only Long School of Medicine student organizations in good standing with the Office of Student Life may apply.
  • Proposals must be approved by the LSOM student organization’s faculty advisor.
  • Student organizations must submit a close-out report upon completion of the project that evaluates the effectiveness of the project and outlines all expenses.

Program Criteria

The following criteria will be used to review proposals:

  • Alignment with Mission: How well does the proposed initiative align with our office’s mission of enhancing educational opportunities and performance for current or prospective LSOM students?
  • Feasibility: Can the project be effectively executed within the given timeframe and the resources requested?
  • Impact and Reach: How many prospective or current students will benefit, and what will be the impact on their educational experiences?
  • Measurable Success: What well-defined, measurable outcomes or goals will the proposed initiative aim to achieve (i.e., improved test scores, increased participation, enhanced learning experiences, etc.)?
  • Budget and Resource Management: Is the proposed budget reasonable and well-allocated to achieve the project goals effectively?

How to Apply

Applications to the Excellence in Medical Education Student Leaders Grant Program must be submitted via an our online form. In addition to the online application form, students must submit a one-page proposal detailing the project that addresses the criteria specified above and a detailed budget. The application is considered incomplete until the both the online application and proposal packet are received. Standard processing time is no less than 4 weeks. If your proposal includes an event date be sure your complete application is submitted no less than 4 weeks before the event date.
