Personal Statement:

Sonja Brune worked as a registered nurse in cardiology and critical care for 10 years before graduating with her Master of Science in Nursing from UT Health Science Center in 1999. Her graduate training curriculum focused on acute and critical care of the adult with a focus in cardiology and heart failure. She is board certified as an Acute-Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist and Heart Failure Nurse. After working as a Heart Failure Advanced Practice Provider in a private cardiology practice and a heart transplant program, she joined UT Health Division of Cardiology as a Heart Failure Specialist in 2007. She is driven to empower heart failure patients to overcome challenges in order to improve outcomes across the continuum of their disease. She works closely with other specialties in managing advanced heart failure patients and refers for advanced therapies such as ventricular assist devices and heart transplantation as well as palliation for those who are not considered candidates. Her years of expertise in this sub-specialty results in invitations to speak to trainees of all levels within the medical school as well as local and regional conferences. She maintains clinics at UT Medical Arts & Research Center and various University Health System locations.
