Development of a Behavioral Economic Intervention to Reduce HIV Risk Behaviors

Principal Investigator: Chukwuemeka Okafor, PhD, MPH

Conditions: HIV

Purpose

This project is exploring a new behavioral strategy, called Episodic Future Thinking (EFT), to help young adults reduce risky behaviors linked to HIV, such as not taking HIV prevention medicine (PrEP), using methamphetamine, and having unprotected sex. EFT encourages people to think about their future in concrete ways, which may improve decision-making and lower risk. The study will test whether delivering EFT through smartphones is both practical and helpful, with the long-term goal of creating more effective HIV prevention tools.
