Message from the Chief
Our Division of Child Abuse Pediatrics was established in 2006 after the American Board of Pediatrics formally recognized child abuse as a subspecialty. Our faculty have been privileged to serve as leaders and selected members of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Child Abuse, the American Board of Pediatrics, and the Texas Pediatric Society (AAP state chapter) Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect.
Education and collaboration are core values for our program. We have trained several outstanding fellows over the past 10 years. We were among the first fellowship programs to receive ACGME accreditation. All faculty and fellows are dedicated and involved in teaching medical students, residents, nurses, and medical professionals as well as non-medical professionals in our community, Texas, and nationwide. We collaborate with several hospitals and practices in our region to facilitate the recognition and assessment of child maltreatment. We work with child protection agencies, law enforcement, children’s advocacy centers, forensic nurses, and other agencies involved in the detection, assessment, and treatment of children who are suspected victims of abuse or neglect.
