Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (off-pump)

Coronary artery bypass surgery is commonly performed using the heart-lung machine to stop your heart for a short time period during the operation. However, there are some circumstances when your doctor may choose to perform the operation without the heart-lung machine. This means that your heart is working normally throughout the operation. This type of procedure is sometimes called “beating-heart surgery.”

Several surgeons at the UT Health Long School of Medicine are experienced at “off-pump” or “beating-heart” surgery. The operation is otherwise very similar to standard bypass surgery. Your doctor can discuss this option with you.
