Hypertension

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a medical condition where the pressures in the arteries of your body are elevated. There are many causes of hypertension, including genetics, obesity, salt intake, and kidney disease.

The diagnosis of hypertension is made by recording your blood pressure on separate occasions. Hypertension is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. It is also involved in heart failure, aneurysm formation, peripheral arterial disease, and kidney disease. Your doctor may recommend treatment to lower your blood pressure to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

The treatment of hypertension is a combination of lifestyle changes and medications. Weight loss, regular exercise, and a healthy diet can reduce high blood pressure. If this is not enough, your doctor may start one or more medications such as metoprolol, hydrochlorothiazide, enalapril, or others.
