A Thoracic Surgeon is a type of doctor who is specially trained to operate on the heart, lung, and esophagus. Most thoracic surgeons were trained to perform all aspects of surgery, but many will have particular areas of interest or specialization. This can include pediatric (or congenital) heart surgery, adult heart surgery, lung surgery, aortic surgery, or transplantation.
The American Board of Thoracic Surgery maintains standards for education, training, and knowledge of thoracic surgeons. Not all thoracic surgeons are board certified, but those who are have passed written and oral examinations administered by the Board, and must maintain competency throughout their career with continued education and testing. All of the surgeons in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery are certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
