Assistant to the Chair

Personal Statement:

Irma Garcia is the Assistant to the Chair for the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.  As of April 2020, Irma has served for 40 years with UT Health San Antonio.  Her career began in high school while working at the University Hospital System (formerly Bexar County Hospital) in the purchasing department.  After 5 years with UHS, she accepted a position at UT Health in 1979 in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology under the direction of Dr. Carl Pauerstein.  Shortly after, an opportunity presented itself and she left UT Health to join a start-up company, “Local Arrangements”, a convention business providing local tours of San Antonio to out-of-town visitors.  In July 1985, she left “Local Arrangements” and returned to the Department of OB/GYN under the direction of Dr. Robert Schenken.  In 2005, she transferred and joined the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery as an Administrative Assistant.  In 2008, she earned the Department of Surgery’s certificate of Appreciation in Recognition for her Outstanding Performance and Dedicated Service”.   In 2010, Ms. Garcia helped transition as Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery became a Department.  She was recruited at that time to become Assistant to the CT Surgery Department Chair.

Irma has 3 adult sons, two of which are in the Army stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and Fort Hood, Texas, respectively.  Her oldest son is a master electrician.  As an empty-nester, she enjoys visiting her sons and 6 grandchildren (2 of which are in college), as well as loves to travel and watch football.
