{"id":1801,"date":"2020-09-13T17:08:59","date_gmt":"2020-09-13T17:08:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/dcsa\/?page_id=1801"},"modified":"2024-06-13T18:49:46","modified_gmt":"2024-06-13T23:49:46","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/dcsa\/education\/postbac\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About the Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The <strong>Pre-Professional Program<\/strong> is a highly intensive and focused one-year full-time <em><strong>post-baccalaureate<\/strong> <strong>graduate certificate<\/strong><\/em> program designed for applicants who have completed undergraduate degrees\u00a0 and are interested in pursuing a career in medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants may be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Career-changers<\/em><\/strong>: those who are science undergraduates who have completed the required coursework for medical school and wish to transition to medical school<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Career-enhancers<\/strong><\/em>: those with a pre-med background who require grade and\/or Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) score enhancement to bolster their competitiveness for admission to these schools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Features of the program include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Preparation for <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/dcsa\/education\/pp\/curriculum\/\">Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/dcsa\/education\/pp\/curriculum\/\">Curriculum<\/a> similar to the pre-clinical years of medical school<\/li>\n<li>Faculty involved in training students in the medical, dental and health profession schools<\/li>\n<li>Personalized <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/dcsa\/education\/postbac\/academicsupport\/\">academic advising<\/a> that includes workshops on applying to medical schools<\/li>\n<li>Small class sizes studying as a single cohort<\/li>\n<li>Opportunities to develop professionalism skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The program allows qualified individuals to start this <strong>gap year program<\/strong> immediately after spring term graduation and, upon completion, become ready for applying to medical &amp; health professional schools as desired the following year.<\/p>\n<p>UT Health San Antonio, with its missions of teaching, research and healing, is located in the center of the <a href=\"https:\/\/southtexasmed.com\/\">South Texas Medical Center at San Antonio<\/a>, the seventh-largest city in the United States. It is one of the country\u2019s leading health sciences universities and is surrounded by a dozen major hospitals, and several clinics. As an academic institution, it is home to medical, dental, graduate, health professions and nursing schools that have collectively 35,800 alumni to date.
