\"\"Dear Colleagues,<\/p>\n

I bring you sad news. I Iearned this weekend that our retired colleague, Damon C. Herbert, passed away last week. Damon had an infection, not Covid, that resulted in hospitalization. He passed away several days later from the secondary effects of multiple sclerosis and a seizure. His wife, Margie, son Garrick, and daughter, Michelle, were with him when he passed peacefully. Funeral arrangements are being made, and an obituary should be up on the Porter Loring site in a few days. Services will be held Jan 21 at 2 pm at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. All friends and colleagues are welcome to attend. The department will send a flower arrangement.<\/p>\n

Damon started his career in our department, then known as the Department of Anatomy, in 1973 and rose through the academic ranks to Professor. He was Interim Associate Dean of Student Affairs for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) from 1994-1999. He taught microscopic anatomy to medical and dental students, as well as Endocrinology of Reproduction and other courses for the GSBS. He was an integral member of the transgenic mouse team when the transgenic core was started in our department, and continued to collaborate with many scientists by helping manage their mouse colonies with tail clippings for genotyping. He was the PI of a doctoral bridge grant from the NIGMS and submitted our department’s first version of the IRACDA application. Damon was a good friend and wonderful colleague for those privileged to work with him.<\/p>\n
