Women in Medicine: Mayra Perez
Mayra Perez, DO, Clinical Assistant Professor
Department of Family and Community Medicine
Long School of Medicine
Dr. Mayra Perez has developed into an excellent Academic Physician with a passion for patient care, teaching, and research. She embodies this idea in her work at UT Health Hill Country Primary Care clinic and in the Health Confianza Pledge program.
Dr. Perez sees patients during the week at our UT Health Hill Country clinic near Leon Springs where she focuses on chronic care management and health promotion. Her work includes managing complex conditions such as diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease while still performing annual health screening for children, adults, and our geriatric population. Additionally, Dr. Perez helps treat patients with musculoskeletal disorders through procedures called Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT). This is commonly offered as an evidence-based treatment for patients struggling with chronic pain. She also participates in teaching 3rd year Medical Students through the Family Medicine Clerkship.
The Health Confianza Pledge program aims to improve the health literacy of our community, particularly in our southern areas of Bexar County. This project involves research with our Health System and patient perceptions of access and availability of health care. She leads a team to pilot programs which hope to increase patient engagement and ultimately improve access and quality of our healthcare system here at UT Health.
