Our EMS Fellowship is an enriching opportunity that provides physicians with the necessary theoretical and applied experiences essential to physicians in the field of EMS medical direction. The program has strong partnerships with numerous regional and national emergency and disaster response agencies and the U.S military. Fellows gain experience conducting field response and trainings with a variety of first responders in diverse settings and scenarios.<\/p>\n

Our Program:<\/h2>\n

EMS Fellows will have a clinical faculty appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine with opportunities to teach medical students and residents. Fellows must participate in weekly didactics, conduct research and quality improvement projects, and administrative assignments.<\/p>\n

Office of the Medical Director Partnership<\/h3>\n

A major training site and role for the fellow is with the UT San Antonio Office of the Medical Director (OMD) for Emergency Health Sciences. Under the direction of Dr. David Miramontes<\/a>, the OMD provides medical direction for the San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD)<\/a> EMS and several other suburban and rural agencies in the San Antonio area. EMS fellows will spend a majority of their time working with the staff of the OMD and SAFD, providing EMS provider education, participating in quality improvement programs, providing on-line medical direction, and helping develop region-wide protocols. These fellows will spend several hours a week responding to scene calls with EMS units, officers and OMD staff.<\/p>\n

ACGME Accreditation<\/h3>\n

The EMS Fellowship (12 months) is one of the first EMS Fellowship programs in the country to have ACGME accreditation. Due to this specialized accreditation, graduates are immediately eligible to test for the EMS subspecialty boards.The test is designed to help prepare graduates for the growing field of EMS Medicine. All aspects of EMS are covered in the exam including but not limited to systems and disaster development, field response, research, education, and administration.<\/p>\n

San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium<\/h3>\n

Our program works closely with the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) Military EMS Fellowship. It is a unique opportunity for civilian EMS fellows to learn from military leaders on the forefront in developing the latest techniques in military field care. The partnership also allows fellows to participate in on-the-job training opportunities not typically offered in civilian EMS fellowships.<\/p>\n
