Residents benefit from unique rotations in <strong>neurocritical care<\/strong>, along with early and comprehensive exposure to <strong>ultrasound and EMS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout their training, residents care for patients with a wide range of acuities and complex medical conditions across multiple clinical settings, including <strong>community sites, acute care units, emergency departments, intensive care units, and the trauma resuscitation unit.<\/strong> These varied experiences provide residents with the clinical knowledge, procedural skills, adaptability, and confidence needed to manage patients in any environment.<\/p>\n<p>Through this breadth and depth of clinical training, our graduates emerge as <strong>well-rounded Emergency Medicine physicians<\/strong> prepared to thrive in both academic medicine and a wide variety of community practice settings.<\/p>\n<p>The hospitals participating in these rotations outside of University Hospital include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"far\">\n<li>Metropolitan Methodist Hospital<\/li>\n<li>Baptist Health System<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Rotation Highlights:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PGY1:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Focus on Foundations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Orientation Block<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The goal of the Orientation block is to provide a smooth transition into residency. During this two week block, residents discover how the Emergency Department, hospital and community work together to provide patient care. Through this orientation block, participants get to know fellow residents and faculty through various educational experiences. Activities include a hospital tour, a simulation events as well as the annual resident retreat. The residents are introduced to programs related to emergency medicine including the medical flight service, the disaster medical assistance team, the center for injury prevention and research. There are also procedure labs, splinting courses, and wellness events.\u00a0 Residents will work about 15 hours weekly in the ED during this block.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ultrasound Block<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New residents will work closely with Ultrasound Fellowship-Trained faculty and fellows during the first half of their PGY-1 year.\u00a0 During this block, you will learn all the core ultrasound modalities, ultrasound-guided procedures, basic ultrasound physics, and knobology.\u00a0 Each week residents will review all the studies performed in the department with faculty and fellows, increasing their exposure to unique pathology, pattern recognition, and discussing current ultrasound literature by participating in weekly journal club.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adult &amp; Pediatric Anesthesia Rotation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Adult and Pediatric Anesthesia rotation gives EM-1 residents a strong foundation in airway management and procedural sedation while caring for both adult and pediatric patients. Residents gain hands-on experience with airway evaluation, intubation, ventilation, patient monitoring, and perioperative care, with dedicated time in the pediatric operating rooms. Working closely with the Anesthesia team, residents also develop confidence recognizing and managing difficult airways, using sedation and analgesic medications, and caring for critically ill patients. This early experience provides skills that translate directly to the Emergency Department and prepares residents for the airway and resuscitation challenges they will encounter throughout residency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Orthopedics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Experience hands-on learning and real responsibility during your PGY-1 Orthopedics rotation at University Hospital. You&#8217;ll work closely with orthopedic faculty and residents, to develop essential skills in musculoskeletal evaluation, imaging, and procedures like fracture reduction and wound care. The rotation features daily teaching rounds, and exposure to both acute and chronic orthopedic conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MICU (PGY1)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Experience the MICU rotation as a PGY-1 and build a strong foundation in critical care. Over four weeks, you&#8217;ll work closely with expert faculty and fellows, taking the lead on procedures like central lines, airway management, and resuscitations. You&#8217;ll develop hands-on skills in managing complex, critically ill patients, sharpen your clinical judgment, and learn to navigate the challenges of multidisciplinary care. This rotation is designed to prepare you for high-stakes situations, with direct supervision, real responsibility, and a focus on both technical and communication skills. Join us to gain the confidence and competence needed for any emergency medicine career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pediatric EM\/Trauma<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Caring for pediatric emergencies can be very different from \u201cadult\u201d medicine, including weight-based dosing of medications, and different pathophysiology.\u00a0 To help prepare you for longitudinal pediatric and trauma exposure after intern year, we have you spend two 2-week dedicated blocks in our pediatric emergency department.\u00a0 We pair this with spending two weeks on our trauma team, building two blocks of your intern year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PGY2:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Focus on critical care<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After your PGY1 year provides a foundation of common emergency presentations, procedures, and developing plans, the PGY2 year has a heavy focus on critical care.\u00a0 During this year, residents rotate through the Neurocritical Care Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.\u00a0 In these blocks, residents function as senior residents, developing comprehensive care plans, performing advanced procedures, and developing comfort managing multi-organ system problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EMS &amp; Prehospital Medicine Rotation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our EMS rotation gives residents hands-on experience with the prehospital side of Emergency Medicine and a better understanding of how care begins before a patient reaches the Emergency Department. Residents gain exposure to 911 dispatch, EMS operations, medical control, disaster planning, and ground and air medical transport. Throughout the EM-1 and EM-2 years, residents participate in EMS ride-alongs and work with local EMS systems, with opportunities to take part in quality improvement and provide education to prehospital providers. Senior residents can also gain additional experience with Life Flight and STRAC, providing a broader look at regional emergency and disaster response.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medical Toxicology Rotation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Medical Toxicology rotation gives PGY-2 residents a four-week experience with the UT Health San Antonio\/South Texas Poison Center, focusing on the evaluation and management of poisoned and exposed patients. Residents gain hands-on experience with toxicology consults, patient rounds, case discussions, simulation, and the use of decontamination and antidotes. The rotation also includes lectures, journal club, a hands-on toxicology lab, and unique learning experiences outside the hospital. Residents interested in toxicology can also explore opportunities for research and scholarly work during the rotation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NeuroICU<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Neuro ICU rotation at UHS offers PGY2 residents a hands-on, immersive experience in managing critically ill neurological patients. Residents gain expertise in rapid evaluation, diagnosis, and stabilization, perform advanced procedures like intubation and central line placement, and develop strong clinical judgment under direct faculty supervision. The rotation emphasizes multidisciplinary teamwork, frequent didactic sessions, and opportunities for leadership and teaching. It&#8217;s a challenging, rewarding month that builds confidence and prepares residents for high-acuity care in both neurocritical and emergency settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OB<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Experience hands-on learning in our OB\/GYN rotation, where you&#8217;ll build confidence managing both routine and emergent obstetric and gynecologic cases. Residents gain practical skills in patient evaluation, ultrasound, and deliveries, while working closely with a supportive team. You&#8217;ll participate in labor and delivery, assist with procedures, and develop strong communication with patients and consultants. This rotation is designed to prepare you for real-world challenges in women&#8217;s health, all within a collaborative and educational environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PICU<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Step into the Pediatric ICU rotation and gain hands-on experience managing critically ill children. As part of a dynamic team, you&#8217;ll sharpen your skills in advanced procedures, rapid decision-making, and patient care under expert faculty supervision. This four-week rotation offers real opportunities to lead resuscitations, develop treatment plans, and collaborate with colleagues from multiple specialties. It&#8217;s a challenging, rewarding environment designed to build confidence and competence for your future in emergency medicine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Emergency Medicine Rotation (2nd year)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Community Emergency Medicine rotation gives residents valuable experience in a busy, high-volume urban emergency department at Northeast Baptist Hospital. Residents build efficiency and confidence managing multiple patients at once while caring for a broad range of medical and trauma presentations. As they progress through the rotation, they take on greater responsibility for patient care, resuscitations, department flow, supervision, and teaching. The rotation also provides opportunities to develop advanced procedural skills and gain experience working with community consultants and caring for a diverse, urban patient population.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PGY3:\u00a0Focus towards independent practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Much of the PGY3 year is focused in the Emergency Department.\u00a0 Senior residents will have a focus on running resuscitations, supporting PGY1 residents, and also working as a Teaching Resident, where they assist 3rd and 4th year medical students with EM specific chalk talks, procedure guides, and mentorship.<\/p>\n<p>Other rotations during PGY3 year are: Admin, Elective, Metropolitan Methodist Hospital, Longitudinal Pediatrics, Longitudinal Trauma, and MICU, functioning as the senior resident, assisting with consults and responding to codes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transplant &amp; ECMO ICU Rotation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our Transplant and ECMO ICU rotation offers senior residents an opportunity to care for some of the hospital\u2019s most complex and critically ill patients. Residents gain hands-on experience managing transplant patients and patients requiring ECMO, while developing advanced skills in critical care, resuscitation, procedures, and multisystem organ failure. Working alongside transplant, ECMO, perfusion, and critical care teams, residents also gain valuable experience with multidisciplinary decision-making and high-stakes patient and family communication. This rotation is an excellent opportunity for residents interested in critical care, ECMO, transplant medicine, or caring for high-acuity patients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MICU (PGY3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Experience the MICU rotation at University Hospital\u2014a dynamic, hands-on month where senior residents take the lead in managing critically ill patients. You&#8217;ll refine your skills in advanced procedures, ventilator management, and resuscitation, all while working closely with expert faculty and fellows. As the supervising resident, you&#8217;ll guide junior learners, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and gain confidence in high-stakes decision-making. This rotation is designed to challenge you, build your expertise, and prepare you for independent practice in critical care and emergency medicine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Emergency Medicine Rotation (3rd year)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Experience the fast-paced, high-volume urban emergency department at Methodist Hospital Metropolitan during your EM-3 year. This four-week rotation offers hands-on management of critically ill patients, advanced procedures, and real-time decision-making in a dynamic community setting. Residents gain proficiency in patient flow, resource allocation, and leadership, all under the guidance of board-certified emergency physicians.
