The track includes the following opportunities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Formal monthly wilderness medicine didactics<\/li>\n<li>Wilderness medicine research<\/li>\n<li>Event medicine<\/li>\n<li>Formal backcountry skills courses<\/li>\n<li>Backcountry practicums including Big Bend National Park<\/li>\n<li>Advanced Wilderness Medicine Life Support (AWLS) certification<\/li>\n<li>EMS rides outs<\/li>\n<li>Training events with Search and Rescue (SAR), local law enforcement, and US Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) groups<\/li>\n<li>UME teaching during 4th UME elective and interest group events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Wilderness Track Objectives<\/h2>\n<p>The objectives of the track are to help residents develop the skills and knowledge needed to safely practice in the backcountry. Residents will also learn to effectively provide medical care in austere environments. By completing the track, residents will earn credit towards becoming a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM) and be well prepared for a formal fellowship in Wilderness Medicine. Faculty for the track also include Ryan Bierle PA-C, Steven Moore, MD, and the Department of Emergency Medicine Wilderness Medicine Fellow.
