Nearly 90 faculty, <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/emergency-medicine\/team\/app\/\">advanced practice providers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/emergency-medicine\/team\/current-fellows\/\">fellows<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/emergency-medicine\/team\/current-residents\/\">residents<\/a> comprise the physician and provider cadre. 25 <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/emergency-medicine\/team\/staff\/\">staff<\/a> support the mission including a dedicated research coordinator, grants specialist, and research assistants providing clinical trials support.<\/p>\n<p>The research section is lead by <a href=\"http:\/\/profiles.uthscsa.edu\/?pid=profile&amp;id=3Z70X9HS6\">Dr. Robert A. Each fellowship has a different requirement for research and scholarship, and fellows are invited to check their program requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The department has collaborations with researchers in EMS and prehospital care, military and combat medicine, biomedical engineering, trauma, and other important fields. Fellows are invited to engage with faculty in emergency medicine were associated departments when planning and engaging in research.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"carat-double\" href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/emergency-medicine\/education\/fellowships\/\">Learn more about our Fellowship programs<\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Resident Research<\/h2>\n<p>The Department of Emergency Medicine provides both research and scholarship related education, as well as project opportunities for <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/emergency-medicine\/education\/residency\/\">residents<\/a> conducting innovation, discovery, and knowledge synthesis.[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7115&#8243; img_size=&#8221;400&#215;300&#8243;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]In Journal Club, residents meet once monthly at an off-site location, and in a systematic fashion, dissect a current journal article as they learn the process of critical appraisal and analysis. First year residents present the material, the second-year resident conducts the analysis, and the third-year resident provides the overview and clinical relevance. A faculty mentors the presenting residents through the entire process. This exciting postdoctoral opportunity is focused on emergency medical device development with an emphasis on academic leadership development and cross-disciplinary collaboration. The ideal candidate holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering or in related fields such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Science, or similar.<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with the Medical Design Innovations Laboratory within the College of Engineering and Integrated Design, the Department of Emergency Medicine has established medical device research, development, and commercialization expertise in the areas of critical lifesaving technologies, especially airway management and ventilation. Additional areas of interest include point-of-care ultrasound imaging, hypo- and hyperthermia devices for austere environments, and clinician-innovator education. A significant component of the program involves working directly with clinicians and facilitating innovation. The Department maintains other important collaborations including the Joint Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering, US Army Institute of Surgical Research, Brooke Army Medical Center, and Navy and Air Force medical research units.<\/p>\n<p>Research and development will focus on airway and ventilation device development and will include the development of additional life- and limb-saving technologies of interest to the department. Grant writing and identification of funding sources for future projects will be major components of this position. The candidate can also anticipate developing novel technology education programs for medical and healthcare professionals. Work may include research with animals, human subjects, or cadavers, and involves laboratory work involving standard and novel engineering.
