Geriatric Endocrinology Fellowship Track

The UT Health San Antonio Division of Geriatrics, Gerontology, and Palliative Medicine in partnership with the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism collaborates in the training of Endocrinology Track in their Geriatric Medicine Fellowship.

Endocrine disorders like diabetes, thyroid disease, and osteoporosis are more prevalent in older adults than any other age group.  As the population ages, Endocrinologists and Geriatricians alike will need to become more familiar with the intricacies of working with this growing group who frequently present atypically, with increased complications, and with multi-morbidity complicating treatment.

The Geriatric Endocrinology Track is for fellows who would like to improve their clinical care of older adults with endocrine disorders and/or develop a career as a clinician-scientist with a focus on age related endocrine issues.  Applicants to the track must have completed an ACGME accredited Internal Medicine Residency and can either 1) have already completed an Endocrinology Fellowship, 2), plan to apply for an Endocrinology Fellowship in the future, or 3) desire a specialized Endocrine focus in their 1 year Geriatric Medicine Fellowship.

In addition to standard Geriatric Medicine Fellowship rotations and teaching conferences, Endocrinology Track fellows will rotate on the inpatient endocrine consult service, attend endocrine case conferences and grand rounds, and have protected research time dedicated to aging and endocrinology.  Fellows will benefit from colocation with research specialists in aging and endocrinology in the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) Geriatrics Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), The Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, and the San Antonio Claude D. Pepper Older American’s Independence Center.

After completing this 1 year Geriatric Medicine Endocrinology Track Fellowship, fellows will be eligible for Geriatric Medicine board certification.

**This track does not fulfill any of the requirements for future Endocrinology fellowship or board certification, nor does it guarantee a position in the UT Health San Antonio Endocrinology Fellowship.  Opportunities exist for well qualified applicants to extend training the GRECC Advanced Fellowship in Geriatrics, a 2 year post-doctoral research fellowship aimed at preparing clinician-scientists to apply for a VA Career Development Award.
