Overview:

This presentation will highlight Dr. Keisha Bell’s professional journey toward work in the area of health disparities and women’s health, and provide an overview of racial disparities in patient-physician communication. Participants will learn communication strategies to improve the experience of care for Black patients. The target audience for this presentation are health care professionals who are interested in learning more about racial disparities in the health care context.

Objectives:

By the end the presentation, participants will be able to:

• Summarize racial disparities in maternal health outcomes
• Describe 3 ways in which clinicians differ in their communication with Black patients as compared to White patients
• Employ at least 1 strategy to improve patient-clinician communication with Black patients
