Overview:

Significant mental and physical health disparities continue to exist for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and all other genders, sexes and sexualities (LGBTQ+) in the United States. Barriers to health care for LGBTQ+ individuals include discrimination and lack of cultural competence by providers and inside of health systems.  In recognition of these disparities, there has been a trend over the past few decades to increase cultural competency education around the care of LGBTQ+ in Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and Graduate Medical Education (GME) training programs.  Leading efforts in GME, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) published recommended competencies that family medicine residents should accomplish to help care for their LGBTQ+ patients. However, few resources exist to help develop faculty and residents on how to teach LGBTQ+ health to various levels of learners. LGBTQ+ health training has been shown to improve provider comfort, knowledge and skills, and has the potential to meaningfully impact a vulnerable patient population with specific health care needs. In this presentation, Mrs. Wueste, Drs. Cooper, Roth and Lurie, will discuss educational strategies to promote appropriate care for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Objectives:

1.    Discuss why training for LGBTQ+ competent care is important

2.    Dispel Myths and acknowledge Stigmas associated with the LGBTQ+ Community

3.    Demonstrate educational strategies and curricular content developed to promote education to appropriately care for LGBTQIA+ individuals
