PRIMARY CARE WEEK – Grand Rounds – Caring for the Caregiver
Event Date & Time
October 5, 2022 at 12:30pm - 1:30pmLocation
Event Details:
Overview:
In 2020, 53 million family caregivers (FCGs) provided ~34 billion hours of uncompensated care services to loved ones worth over $470 billion.2 Informal FCGs provide self-care and emotional and social support for loved ones living with debilitating diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia (AD/RD). Current trends in family caregiving include the greater complexity of care needs in the home, the rising out-of-pocket costs of care and a growing care gap between FCG demand and supply.2 This situation will intensify as the demand for informal caregiving services exceeds the availability of caregivers due to an aging population, steep increases in rates of ADRD and smaller average family size. Changing demographics also show more diversity among FCGs and disparities in available FCG resources.
In this lecture series, Dr. Mitchell will share results from Project Achieve, a national study of family caregivers and care recipients experiencing a care transition from hospital to home. Results will be contextualized within the broad extant literature on expanding roles for family caregivers and emerging disparities in family caregiver resources and supports.
Objectives:
-Increase awareness of critical gaps in family caregiver availability and support for adults living with chronic and serious illnesses
-Increase knowledge of disparities in family caregiver resources across race, ethnicity and socioeconomic groups
-Present health policy changes impacting family caregiver roles and support services
