Overview:

Because of their journeys and having often faced healthcare access challenges in their home countries, refugees arriving in San Antonio have layered medical needs. During this symposium, Margaret Costantino, MA, Heidi Worabo, DNP, & Suhaib Haq, MD will explore the critical barriers to culture acclimation of refugees (during their resettlement) and provide strategies to mitigate these challenges. This presentation will also discuss how to provide culturally effective healthcare for female Afghanistan refugees as well as lessons learned at the El Bari Community Health Center, a free charity clinic.

Objectives:

•Identify critical barriers to culture acclimation of refugees (during their resettlement) and strategies to mitigate these challenges.
•Discuss how to effectively provide culturally effective healthcare for female Afghanistan refugees.
•Describe the how the El Bari clinic, a free charity clinic, is serving the underserved and bridging the gaps in healthcare.
