The incidence of End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) cases has been increasing since the 1980s, leading to a significant burden on the U.S. health system. In 2018, there were over 500,000 patients receiving maintenance dialysis, who represent approximately 1% of the U.S. Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) population but account for approximately 7.2% of Medicare FFS spending. Primary care professionals play a significant role in prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment. In this lecture, Dr. Nassar will expound on a clinical approach for patients with CKD, and explain how to implement evidence-based interventions to slow the progression.

Objectives:

Understand the overall approach to patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.

Emphasizing the importance of UA and urine-protein creatinine ratio in the workup.

Implementing evidence-based interventions to slow the progression, with the focus on ACEi/ARB & SGLTi.

Presenter:

Tareq Nassar, MD, MBBS
Clinical Assistant Professor
Nephrology Fellowship-Program Director
UT Health San Antonio
Medical Director UHS Renal Clinics and Dialysis West Clinic

Financial Disclosures:

Tareq Nassar, MD, MBBS has no financial relationships with ineligible companies to disclose.

The Family & Community Medicine Professional Development and Grand Rounds Committee members (Mark Nadeau, MD, Marcy Wiemers, MD, Maria Del Pilar Montañez Villacampa, MD, Christine Song, DO, Nehman Andry, MD, Gabriela Lopez, PsyD, Yun Shi, MD, Stacy Ogbeide, PsyD, Inez I.
