Overview:<\/h3>\n

During this presentation, Lauren Bishop, MD and Fehima Dawy, MD will examine the treatment of constipation with over-the-counter agents. Through a systematic review of over-the-counter constipation treatment options, they will discuss which agents should be recommended based on evidence. They will demonstrate that the most efficacious agents are polyethylene glycol or senna as first-line laxatives, along with other supplementary treatments.<\/p>\n

Objectives:<\/h3>\n

1) Define constipation, the ROME criteria and its prevalence and impact.
\n2) Review the different classes and types of over the counter constipation treatment options.
\n3) Highlight the over the counter treatment options that have been shown to be the most efficacious in the evidence.
\n4) Provide knowledge on less effective treatment options.
\n5) Suggest practice recommendations for over the counter options that are evidence backed to improve constipation in patients.<\/p>\n
