Yet, for centuries, FGM/C has remained a hidden tradition. FGM/C is a human rights violation and survivors often live in silence with long term consequences including pain, sexual dysfunction, recurrent urinary tract infections and psychological trauma. Survivors remain undiagnosed by healthcare professionals and the practice continues. The false belief that this only occurs in rural parts of Africa must be shattered as FGM/C occurs to women of all backgrounds in all parts of the world except for Antarctica. It is imperative that health care providers recognize survivors and girls at risk for FGM/C. In this discussion we will highlight what management of FGC from a generalist or primary care perspective might look like, as well as how to approach the matter with both patients and colleagues in a culturally sensitive manner.

Presenter:

Mariam Sabir, MD

Wellness Chief Resident, PGY-3
Department of Family & Community Medicine
UT Health San Antonio

Financial Disclosures:

Mariam Sabir, MD has no financial relationships with ineligible companies to disclose.

TThe Family & Community Medicine Professional Development and Grand Rounds Committee members (Mark Nadeau, MD, MBA; Nehman Andry, MD; Maria Del Pilar Montanez Villacampa, MD, Stacy Ogbeide, PsyD; Yun Shi, MD, PhD; Marcy Wiemers, MD; Christine Song, DO; Gabriela Gibson-Lopez, PsyD; Margaret Finley, MD; Richel Avery, MD; Khorshid Amirkhosravi, MD; Jeff Svec, MD; Oralia Bazaldua, Pharm D; Kelsi Sexton Barajas, MA, MEd) have no financial relationships with ineligible companies to disclose.

The Family & Community Medicine Professional Development and Grand Rounds Committee member Carlos Roberto Jaén, MD has disclosed he receives royalties from General Practice and Family Medicine for being UpToDate Editor-in-Chief.

Credits:

AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.00 hours), Non-Physician Participation Credit (1.00 hours)

Target Audience:

Specialties – Primary Care; Family Medicine
Faculty, residents, other health care providers and staff from our department; physicians and health care providers from San Antonio and South Texas; and medical students in our third-year clerkship and fourth year rotations.

Accreditation:

The UT Health Science Center San Antonio is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation:

The UT Health Science Center San Antonio designates this live activity up to a maximum of 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses and other healthcare professionals will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
