Boris Blechacz, MD, PhD

Personal Statement:

Dr. Boris Blechacz is an academic clinician-educator and research scientist with extensive experience in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.  He earned his medical degree from the University of Heidelberg in Germany, followed by research training in virology and gene therapy of hepatocellular cancer, first at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg and then at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he earned a PhD.  He completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology & Hepatology fellowship at Mayo/Rochester under the auspices of the ABIM Physician Scientist Training Program.

He served on the faculty of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston from 2011-2018, where he conducted research in liver disease, served as Associate Clinical Medical Director in the Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention, and rose to the rank of Associate Professor of Medicine.  From 2018-2021 Dr. Blehacz served as Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia.  He joined the UTHSA faculty in 2021 and serves as Section Chief for Gastroenterology in the Audie Murphy Veterans Administration Hospital, where he focuses on educational and clinical program development.
