Geriatric Medicine Fellowship<\/span><\/h1>\n

The UT Health San Antonio Geriatric Medicine Fellowship has prepared Internal Medicine and Family Medicine physicians in the outstanding care of older adults since our initial accreditation in 1990. Fellows routinely become leaders in academic and clinical settings. This one-year fellowship not only offers training in geriatric syndromes and common diseases in the older adult, but also in clinical teaching, curriculum development, research, and quality improvement. Fellows train alongside our Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellows as well as other geriatrics and palliative focused interprofessional trainees in nursing, social work, pharmacy, psychology, and chaplaincy. Fellows also benefit from training alongside national experts in aging and geroscience research from the South Texas Veterans Health Care System\u2019s Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), The San Antonio Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, The Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, and the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer\u2019s and Neurodegenerative Diseases.<\/p>\n

Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship<\/span><\/h1>\n

The UT Health San Antonio Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) Fellowship Program trains healthcare providers to become leaders in the field of hospice and palliative care. We began training palliative physician fellows in 1999 and received ACGME accreditation in 2008 when accreditation for HPM training programs began. Training encompasses the full spectrum of clinical care, from prevention to end-of-life care and on through bereavement care for our patients and their families. Fellows will treat patients in multiple clinical settings and gain an understanding of the interdisciplinary approach to hospice and palliative medicine. Fellows are encouraged to challenge current paradigms of care and to develop better methods for the care for hospice and palliative care patients. Fellows are exposed to a diversity of research and educational activities within the University and are given the opportunity to develop their own research skills and interests under the supervision of a select group of mentors.<\/p>\n

Prior to starting the HPM fellowship, physician candidates must have completed residency training in one of the following sponsoring American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Boards: Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, Neurology, Radiology, or Surgery<\/p>\n

Note: We have a pediatric track available for pediatricians completing the HPM fellowship.<\/p>\n

Integrated Geriatric & Palliative Medicine Fellowship<\/h1>\n

Since 2014, the UT Health San Antonio Geriatric Medicine Fellowship and Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship began participating in the ABIM Pilot Program to provide an Integrated 2-Year Fellowship in Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. This innovative program is for trainees who wish to become board certified in both Geriatric Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. By taking advantage of overlapping training criteria in both fields, trainees gain increased elective time and an interleaving of experiences throughout the two years. Fellows utilize their increased elective time to develop leadership skills and expertise in their area(s) of interest beyond what the traditional model of completing each fellowship separately can afford. Fellows routinely become leaders in academic and clinical settings.<\/p>\n
