A message from our Program Director
Thank you for your interest in our Internal Medicine Residency Program. Here at the UT Health San Antonio we take great pride in our teaching program and are firmly committed to the highest standards for education and clinical care. The success of our program is due in large part to our educational philosophy that makes resident teaching our highest priority. We recognize and try to meet the individual needs of each house officer. With this individualized approach we have successfully placed our residents in highly competitive fellowships, academic medicine careers, and urban and small-town practices.
We practice in two hospital settings with complementary patient populations, thus, increasing patient diversity without over-burdening residents with multiple hospital systems to master. These two hospitals are attached by a covered walkway keeping our residents in close contact with each other throughout the training experience. Our two hospital systems are fiscally strong and allow us to remain a program large enough to provide excellent resident diversity but small enough to provide a personalized approach to residency training.
Our learning climate is open and encourages the full growth potential of each trainee. Faculty, residents, and students work together with staff at both hospitals as teams are fully engaged in learning and the care of our patients. The night float system and a unique ‘2 on/1 off’ schedule in the intensive care unit rotation gives residents adequate clinical experience while allowing them sufficient time off. Pre-set admission limits are strictly enforced at both hospitals.
Teaching each week includes formal didactic sessions, attending rounds, morning report, intern learning groups, clinicopathologic conferences, and sub-specialty conferences. We strive to make conferences and learning groups interactive and engaging to maximize their learning value.
We attract candidates from across the nation with competitive academic records who are enthusiastic about Internal Medicine and looking for a supportive program in which to flourish. If you are looking for a friendly and supportive training environment that will allow you to reach your full potential, we invite you to visit us for a closer look.
