Application Information

Our program offers approximately 30-32 categorical and 10-12 preliminary positions annually

We offer two tracks for categorical Internal Medicine applicants through the National Residency Matching Program:

  • Categorical Medicine NRMP# 1722140C0
  • Advanced Inpatient Medicine Skills (AIMS) Track NRMP# 1722140C4

(Note: in 2019, the Advanced HIV Medicine Skills (AHMS) Track will no longer require a separate NRMP number. Residents will have the opportunity to request the AHMS track after the main match.)

Residency Program Options

For preliminary residents, there are three programs:

Med-Prelim/Ophthalmology NRMP# 1722140P4

Ophthalmology applicants who match to the Ophthalmology program at UT Health are eligible for this “linked” program. Ophthalmology preliminary residents have a curriculum in Ophthalmology during their ambulatory weeks and also have an elective in Ophthalmology in order to meet the new requirements for 3 months of Ophthalmology training during the PGY-1 year. There is no requirement for a separate interview specifically for the PGY-1 year.

Medicine-Preliminary NRMP# 1722140P0

Preliminary residents planning to seek advanced training in any specialty may apply for this preliminary track. The program during the  Preliminary Interview day  offers specific information about the curriculum for the PGY-1 year.

We accept applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) offered by the American Association of Medical Colleges. We DO NOT accept applications outside of ERAS.

Application Requirements

We require the following documentation with your ERAS application:

  1. A complete and official medical school transcript;
    2. The Dean’s letter (MSPE);
    3. Three letters of recommendation. Two from members of the Department of Internal Medicine and letters from attending physicians supervising your medicine sub-internship or ICU experience are highly suggested;
    4. United States Medical Licensure Examination (USMLE) transcript (parts I and II);
    5. Personal statement.

This information is reviewed by our residency application committee and invitations are extended as early as possible. We understand the difficulties students face making complicated travel arrangements. Our interview season extends from October through January. We limit the number of applicants on any given day to assure you a more personal view of our training program. Preliminary interviews are held on Mondays and Categorical interviews are held on Thursdays and Fridays.
