Enriqueta Bond and Elaine Gallin, visited the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio on May 14, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Their visit provided faculty with the opportunity to discuss how the grant has impacted their research. During their visit, Dr. Bond and Dr. Gallin met with the following 2017 Young Investigator Awardees:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Ann Griffith, Ph.D.<\/strong><br \/>\nDepartment of Microbiology, Immunology &amp; Molecular Genetics<br \/>\n<em>Novel Strategies to Boost T Cell Number and Function During and After Tumor Radiation and Chemotherapy<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Zhijie Liu, Ph.D.<\/strong><br \/>\nDepartment of Molecular Medicine<br \/>\n<em>Targeting Enhancer Activation Machinery in Breast Cancer Hormone Resistance<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Andrew Pickering, Ph.D.<\/strong><br \/>\nBarshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies\/ Department of Molecular Medicine<\/li>\n<li><em>The Effect of TXNRD2 Augmentation on Heart Disease Outcomes<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Gandadhara Reddy Sareddy, Ph.D.<\/strong><br \/>\nDepartment of Obstetrics and Gynecology<br \/>\n<em>Novel Epigenetic Therapy to Target Stemness and Therapy Resistance in Glioblastoma<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Alexei Tumanov, M.D., Ph.D.<\/strong><br \/>\nDepartment of Microbiology, Immunology &amp; Molecular Genetics<br \/>\n<em>Targeting Novel Cytokine Pathways in Colon Cancer<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They also met with Chairman of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology &amp; Molecular Genetics, Dr. Paolo Casali. Dr. Casali provided a tour of the department\u2019s newly renovated facilities and discussed the success of five department faculty receiving Voelcker Awards in three years.<\/p>\n<p>The Max and Minnie Tomerlin Volcker Fund provides grant funds to rising young investigators with innovative and exciting medical research that explores cures for cancer, heart disease, arthritis, muscular dystrophy, retinitis, or maculative degeneration of the retina.
