Who Are We?

The Division of Neuromuscular Medicine consists of 2 providers who are both board certified in Neuromuscular Medicine. The division has an EMG and autonomic testing lab at the MARC.   The division directs a MDA Care Center which serves over 700 patients with a variety of neuromuscular disorders and collaborates closely with physical therapy, occupational therapy, Cardiology, Pulmonology and Orthopedic surgery to provide multidisciplinary care.  The division also has a certified ALS clinic by the National ALS Association which provides a “one stop shop” including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, dietician, social work, neuropsychology and respiratory therapy.  This clinic serves over 200 ALS patients in the South Texas region.  We are also collaborating with the Biggs Institute to also develop a frontotemporal dementia center of excellence given the high incidence of this disorder in our ALS population. The division received ACGME certification to begin a 1 year fellowship in July 2022.

Why Choose Us?

The Neuromuscular clinic focuses on the provision of quality care based on nationally accepted practice guidelines.  We are a comprehensive multi-disciplinary center, where patients can find specialized healthcare providers that understand the disease process and its ramifications, providing access to supplementary services from the Biggs Institute, neurocognitive evaluations with qualified neuropsychologists, psychiatric evaluations for mood disorders, genetic counseling, rehabilitation (PT/OT), speech and swallowing dysfunction and other medical subspecialties.

Expertise:

We are the only comprehensive ALS Center in the area of South Central Texas. We have been certified by the National ALS Association as a Center of Excellence since 1996. This alliance has benefited our ALS community by providing access to genetic counseling, neuropsychology, social work, educational events, support groups, and clinic trials.

Innovation:

Our center offers cutting edge therapies involving Myobloc injections for sialorrhea, Botox injections for spasticity, and all newly approved therapies for all neuromuscular disorders.

Research:

We offer a robust research program including many Clinical trials and innovative research for patients with ALS, myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophies, and peripheral neuropathy. We are an active member of the Northeast ALS Consortium (NEALS) and the Muscle Study Group (MSG).  We are currently part of the Healey Platform study in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital and NEALS.  We are also members of the CReATe Consortium which is a NIH funded project through the University of Miami for patients with motor neuron disorders.  We currently have 5 active trials in Myasthenia Gravis and 1 trial for CIDP.

Education:

We offer one one-year position for a Neuromuscular Fellowship. The fellowship year focuses on primarily clinical and procedural skills and offers the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. We also provide active clinical education to medical students during their neurology rotation and neurology residents in training. There is also participation in recurrent lecture series as part of the department educational curriculum.

Community:

We offer educational talks and resources to our community. We also collaborate and work closely with national and regional ALS Association and the Muscular Dystrophy Association with a focus on improving patients’ lives and raising awareness and providing resources.
