Objectives:<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

  • Enhance knowledge and skills as a clinician educator<\/li>\n
  • Apply a systemic approach to managing physical exam rounds with medical students<\/li>\n
  • Teach clinical reasoning skills in small group setting<\/li>\n
  • Contribute to scholarly work in medical education: \u00a0Examples not limited to: Chapter development, curriculum development, ChalkTalks, Presentations, etc.<\/li>\n
  • Create a clinical educator portfolio<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Details:<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n
      \n
    • Two year commitment<\/li>\n
    • PGY3 mainly, PGY2s welcome<\/li>\n
    • PGY4 year, resident will become Academic Chief<\/li>\n
    • Hours will need to be documented — Initially this will be used to gauge the workload and to develop a standard for future NCET participants<\/li>\n
    • Each resident on NCET will be paired with a mentor<\/li>\n
    • Certificate of NCET completion during graduation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        \n
      • Create a project to be implemented over two years\n
          \n
        • Formulate a project idea to present to committee with 2 year plan in the first few months<\/li>\n
        • Coordinate with mentor once project is approved<\/li>\n
        • Present project at Neurology Research Day at the end of the 2 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • Assist with Stroke mock codes twice a year<\/li>\n
        • Assist with Overcoming Neurophobia Course<\/li>\n
        • Assist with Blumenfeld’s Didactics Series<\/li>\n
        • Assist with other teaching opportunities throughout the year which may include:\n
            \n
          • Lumbar puncture medical student teaching sessions<\/li>\n
          • M&M Neurology sessions with Dr. Romero<\/li>\n
          • Overcoming Neurophobia lectures to Internal Medicine Didactics<\/li>\n
          • Developing and giving chalk talks to medical students<\/li>\n
          • Lectures to Neurology residents<\/li>\n
          • Resident is welcomed to create new teaching opportunities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
          • Participate in the IM Teaching Elective for at least 2 weeks\n
              \n
            • PGY1s may be able to take this elective if planning to enter the NCET during PGY2\/3 year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
            • Attend monthly hour-long seminars, as clinical schedule allows.\n
                \n
              • Seminars focus on teaching and education skills<\/li>\n
              • Most will have an article or other reading<\/li>\n
              • Seminars led by internal medicine faculty department or other UT teaching faculty.<\/li>\n
              • Must attend >50% over the two years<\/li>\n

                  • Bedside physical exam teaching skills<\/li>\n
                  • Teaching clinical reasoning, adult learning theory<\/li>\n

                  • Developing and presenting a lecture or poster<\/li>\n
                  • Curriculum development<\/li>\n
                  • Understanding your teaching style, teaching procedures<\/li>\n
                  • Supporting the struggling learner<\/li>\n
                  • Clinician educator career development, presentation of portfolio<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    • \n
                        \n
                      • Afternoon physical exam rounds with medical students (from stroke, wards and VA)\n
                          \n
                        • At least 4 per year<\/li>\n
                        • Oserved by Dr. Palm or Wards attending with feedback provided after session<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
                        • \n
                            \n
                          • Activities may be altered to accommodate resident interests, or in the event that changes occur in program or medical school curricula.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                              \n
                            • \n
                                \n
                              • As feedback is essential to improvement, the resident is encouraged to seek feedback during all teaching activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                • Educator’s portfolio creation<\/span>\n
                                    \n
                                  • Develop a portfolio of teaching activities and documentation to be presented at the end of the year<\/li>\n
                                  • Examples include:\n
                                      \n
                                    • \n
                                        \n
                                      • List of teaching activities: date, even, learners<\/li>\n
                                      • Curriculum products: eg, chapters, PowerPoints<\/li>\n
                                      • Evaluations or comments: from faculty or learners<\/li>\n
                                      • Video recordings: eg, brief recording of a lecture or noon report<\/li>\n
                                      • Reflective writings: \u00a0your own musing or ideas about anything. Eg, blogging<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                        • Mentor meetings twice a year<\/li>\n
                                        • Need to have at least 3 teaching activities observed by a faculty member to provide feedback in order to accelerate development as an educator\n

                                            • Feedback form must be turned in as part of portfolio<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
                                            • Educational project presentation during Neurology Residency Research day<\/li>\n
