Who Are We?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Division of Vascular Neurology at University of Texas at San Antonio, UT San Antonio includes 5 board-certified vascular neurologists, a dedicated stroke advanced practice provider, and an ACGME vascular neurology fellow. We treat ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke at the only Joint Commission Accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center in San Antonio.  Additionally, we provide outpatient stroke care at University Hospital and UT Medicine clinics. The Endovascular Neurosurgery clinics are supervised by the program director and division chief, Dr. Lee Birnbaum, and the stroke clinics are supervised by all the vascular neurology attendings.<\/p>\n

Why Choose Us?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Our Division of Vascular Neurology is the only academic comprehensive stroke team in South Texas. We diagnose and treat all aspects of stroke care, including acute interventions, secondary prevention, as well as rehabilitation and recovery. We facilitate inpatient and outpatient stroke referrals from throughout the region.<\/p>\n

Expertise:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Our team provides in-hospital acute stroke therapies, including intravenous thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy. Secondary stroke prevention care and post-stroke disability treatments, including botulinum toxin injections for spasticity, are provided at both the University Hospital and UT Medicine clinics.<\/p>\n

Innovation: <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Our team has been a regional leader in the transition to Tenecteplase as the thrombolytic of choice for acute stroke treatment. Additionally, our endovascular services include a state-of-the-art biplane neuro-angiography suite at the University Hospital. Finally, our interdepartmental collaborations with the Biggs Institute for Alzheimer\u2019s and Neurodegenerative Diseases and UT Rehabilitation Medicine ensure optimal stroke recovery that includes both mind and body.<\/p>\n

Research: <\/strong><\/h2>\n

The UT Vascular Neurology division is a leader in stroke research that includes funded trials from private industry, the state of Texas Lone Star Stroke Consortium, and the federal NIH StrokeNet. Our comprehensive stroke research focuses on acute stroke treatment with Tenecteplase, secondary stroke prevention with antithrombotics and statins, as well as rehabilitation and recovery for determinants of functional and cognitive outcomes. The research team includes a dedicated stroke research nurse, a regulatory affairs analyst, and a neuroscience research operations director.<\/p>\n

Education: <\/strong><\/h2>\n

The program offers a one-year ACGME-accredited vascular neurology fellowship and has one position per year. The fellowship offers subspecialty electives that include endovascular neurosurgery, neurocritical care, neuroradiology, spasticity clinic, and research. The inpatient rotations are at the University Hospital Comprehensive Stroke Center, and the outpatient clinics are at both the University Hospital and UT Medicine facilities. Our graduates have accepted a wide variety of positions, including neuro-interventional fellowship, academic faculty, stroke directorship, and neuro-hospitalist.<\/p>\n

Community: <\/strong><\/h2>\n

We offer educational talks and resources to our community. We also collaborate with the national and regional American Stroke Association with a focus on raising community awareness of the signs and symptoms of stroke: Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, Time (BEFAST).<\/p>\n

Our nationally recognized specialists work together with a team of health care providers, including occupational, physical, and speech therapists, as well as neuropsychologists, to help you with the best and most innovative care.<\/p>\n
