[vc_row el_class=”far”][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text css=””]The SIGN (Student Interest Group in Neurology) Club<\/strong> serves to provide the University of Texas at San Antonio, UT San Antonio students opportunities to learn about and experience the fields of Neurology. Throughout the course of the year, we will be coordinating various activities that allow students to interact with residents and faculty and to explore their interest in these neuroscience-related specialties. Activities shall include, but are not limited to, invited guest speakers, senior medical students and resident panels, community outreach, fundraisers and social events.  Membership in SIGN has many benefits, including free AAN membership and eligibility for the AAN-sponsored scholarships listed below.<\/p>\n

Scholarships<\/h2>\n

SIGN members are eligible to apply for two different scholarships:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Medical Student Scholarship to the Annual Meeting is a $1,000 scholarship that is awarded to 60 medical students to attend the AAN Annual Meeting. Applicants must be members of the AAN; preference will be given to SIGN chapter leadership; the application must include a CV and a letter of interest outlining SIGN leadership and activities; the scholarship will be given to no more than one student per institution. Applicants can learn more at AAN Awards & Scholarships<\/a><\/p>\n

The SIGN Summer Research Scholarship is available to SIGN members as a $3,000 award to conduct a summer research project in either an institutional, clinical or laboratory setting where there are ongoing programs of research, service or training or private practice. The AAN will award up to 20 scholarships to first- or second-year medical students who have a supporting preceptor and a project with clearly defined goals. The project is to be conducted through a U.S. or Canadian institution of the student’s choice and jointly designed by the student and the sponsoring institution. The scholarships will be awarded to one student per school, and applicants must be AAN members. The application material will be available at AAMC Summer Intern Perspective<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

A third scholarship is available for minority students:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Minority Scholars Program provides airfare and lodging for up to four nights to attend the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting, including complimentary registration and other perks.  Racial minority medical students from underrepresented and underserved populations in good standing at a US medical school are eligible.  Application requirements include an essay outlining the applicant’s interest in a career in neurology, academic achievements, community involvement and plans to maximize the AAN Annual Meeting opportunity; a letter of recommendation from a neurology professor; and a curriculum vitae.  The application deadline for the 2020 Minority Scholars Program to the Annual Meeting is October 2019<\/strong>.  Applicants can apply online at www.aan.com\/view\/minority<\/a><\/p>\n

Essays are judged on the basis of the quality of the scholarship and on suitability for an audience of general neurologists.

This award seeks to stimulate interest in the field of neurology as an exciting and challenging profession by offering a highly competitive award for the best essay in experimental neurology. Essays are judged on the basis of the quality of the scholarship and on suitability for an audience of general neurologists.
\nMedical Student Essay Award – Roland P. Mackay Award<\/a>\u2028  . This award seeks to stimulate interest in the field of neurology as an exciting and challenging profession by offering a highly competitive award for the best essay on historical aspects.<\/span> Essays are judged on the basis of the quality of the scholarship and on suitability for an audience of general neurologists.

This award seeks to stimulate interest in the field of neurology as an exciting and challenging profession by offering a highly competitive award for the best essay in neuroscience.
