Residency
It is the general philosophy of this program that, as a resident, you participate actively in the management of patients in the operating room. You are expected to progress rapidly in the development of the skills of operative neurosurgery. Although you are provided considerable clinical freedom and the opportunity for clinical practice, there is a longstanding tradition of very close supervision and support from the faculty.
The program lasts seven years, and strongly incorporates basic science with clinical care. You will be provided training in all aspects of neurosurgery, be exposed to a broad range of clinical experiences, and participate in neurosurgical research.
We now have a very active clinical and research program. You can view our facilities and get a sense of working and living environment here in our beautiful and quaint city of San Antonio.
Education
The goal of our program is to produce neurosurgeons with highly developed clinical judgment, expert surgical skills, and an outstanding expertise in basic research. Graduates of this program are fully prepared to enter clinical practice and are also equipped to begin a career in academic medicine.
Our facility regenerates and expands on what the best and the brightest have to offer in this field. The Department of Neurosurgery has reconstructed itself in order to broaden our capabilities, and the faculty members at UT Health are notably the driving force behind this outstanding program, with special training in Pediatric Neurosurgery, Neuro-Trauma and Critical Care, Functional Neurosurgery, Vascular Neurosurgery and Neurosurgical Oncology.
Our Residency Program Director
Our residency program is overseen by Justin Robert Mascitelli, MD, FAANS.
Dr. Mascitelli graduated from Weil Cornell Medical College in New York. He completed his residency at Mount Sinai Health System as well as a fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery and a cerebrovascular surgery fellowship at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. He was recruited to our department in 2018 to provide his expertise in the surgical management of cerebrovascular disorders. In 2022, he became the director of our residency program. His research background involves the endovascular and microsurgical treatment of cerebrovascular disease.
