Shaheryar Hafeez, M.D.

Assistant Professor

Personal Statement:

Dr. Hafeez cares deeply about helping patients survive some of the worst days of their lives with dignity, compassion, and limited disability. He is also very passionate about educating future clinicians; he hopes his instruction will inspire them to make great contributions to science. It is for all these reasons that Dr. Hafeez decided to join the neurocritical care team at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Department of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Hafeez’s current research interests include traumatic brain injury, cerebral vasospasm, status epilepticus, and advanced neurocritical care analytics. Dr. Hafeez is the principal investigator of a novel compression device (Normatec Pulse Controlled Device) for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis in severe traumatic brain injury. He also helped pioneer a novel software that uses advanced analytics to optimize the care of the individual patient with life-threatening brain and spinal cord disorders. At UT Health San Antonio and University Health System, Dr. Hafeez has designed several treatment protocols specific to patients who require specialized neurological critical care based on internationally recognized best practices and best outcomes.  He has authored several peer-reviewed papers, including publications that have appeared in Neurology, Critical Care Medicine, and Neurocritical Care.

Dr. Hafeez has a dual appointment with the Department of Neurology.

Research

  1. 1. Phase I Prospective Observational trial of Normatec Pneumatic Compression Device for the Prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury. UT Health San Antonio, University Hospital System, San Antonio TX. Role: Principal Investigator.  Investigator-initiated study. The Normatec pulse compression device in combination with early administration of pharmacological prophylaxis for DVT, has the potential to fundamentally change the way we prevent DVTs in critically ill patients.

  1. Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit Prospective Registry/Database Project. Principle Investigator. The NSICU database project is a software that was designed and built by Dr. Hafeez and the database analysts in the department of Neurosurgery. The database was designed to capture esoteric clinical data that is lost by the electronic medical record that is generated by the interpretation of information by the clinical team. Since its inception in August 2017, over 1100 clinical encounters have been captured.

  1. BOOST 3: Brain oxygen optimization in severe traumatic brain injury. Phase 3 trial. Local Principle Investigator. We are in the planning stages of planning and should start enrollment by mid 2019.

  1. SAGE-547 Evaluate the efficacy and safety injection in the treatment of subjects with super-refractory Status Epilepticus. Role: Site sub-investigator (closed)
