Faculty Research Development Programs & Events

The Office for Research sponsors a variety of programs and events year-round for the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine faculty. Information for the programs and events are listed below.

Early Career Grant Development Program: is a four-month program designed to enhance the grantsmanship skills of junior clinical faculty with limited experience submitting grants and interested in pursuing extramurally funded research. Upon completion of the program, each participant will be expected to have a proposal suitable for submission to an extramural funding agency. Recruitment for the 2022 cohort has begun, for more information email SOMResearch@uthscsa.edu.

Xiangya Visiting Student Program: Students from the Xiangya School of Medicine in Changsha, China participate in a two-year research learning opportunity with LSOM faculty. The call for faculty mentors for this program is now open. See our Call for MentorsProject template, and Chair’s letter of recommendation template for more information.

Advanced Grant Development: A six-month program for junior clinical faculty with prior experience writing/submitting grants. This program’s purpose is to ensure continued success of promising researchers and advance their career trajectory. Successful candidates will have obtained a career development award or submitted R-series or equivalent awards and are prepared to work on their next/revised grant submission. Recruitment for the 2021 cohort will begin in Fall 2021, for more information email SOMResearch@uthscsa.edu.

Clinical Trials Scholars Program: Launching in Fall 2021, the Clinical Trials Scholars Program provides a formal method of teaching clinical faculty about industry-sponsored clinical trials. This program is presented in partnership with the Institute for Integration of Medicine and Science, UT Health Physicians, and the UT Health San Antonio Clinical Trials Office.

Master Research Awards: These awards recognize faculty who embody the spirit of UT Health San Antonio’s research mission through scientific discovery and mentoring individuals at various stages of their academic research careers, especially junior faculty. Research Week: Held in April, this is the annual poster session for LSOM students, residents, fellows, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty. For more information, please visit our Research Week page.

La Frontera: Exploring the Cutting Edge of Science: Symposium series that brings distinguished speakers from different backgrounds together discuss a common problem from multiple angles. Our next event in Fall 2021 will be led by Dr. Amelie Ramirez and cover Population Health: Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Analytics.

Research Socials: Quarterly networking events to meet other faculty and discuss potential collaborations. Temporarily on-hold due to COVID-19.

Faculty Research Speed Networking: Fast-paced structured networking events for faculty interested in expanding their network of collaborators, particularly between biomedical and clinical faculty. Planning for our next event is underway, check back for more details.
