Students are strongly encouraged to consider applying for the distinction as the distinction may support a competitive residence application. Decisions will be made in the early Spring of your MS4 year by the Student Research Committee.[\/vc_column_text][vc_tta_accordion c_icon=&#8221;chevron&#8221; active_section=&#8221;1&#8243; collapsible_all=&#8221;true&#8221;][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Program Requirements&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1588785100853-ede1d46e-f2f8&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Requirements for achieving the distinction are designed to ensure objective evaluation of merit for the distinction.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimum &#8220;High Pass&#8221; GPA during medical school<\/li>\n<li>research mentor must be a UTHSCSA faculty member<\/li>\n<li>Complete at least one Medical Student Research Elective course (INTD 4210, 4211, or 4212)<\/li>\n<li><del>Complete <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.uthscsa.edu\/generalinformation\/coursedescriptions\/elec\/\">ELEC 5059: Introduction to Research Study Design<\/a><\/del> (this new requirement begins with the Class of 2026)<\/li>\n<li>Complete and submit an <a href=\"https:\/\/apply-uthscsa.smapply.io\/prog\/md_with_distinction_in_research_\/\">intent to apply form<\/a>&#8211; due September 1 of MS4 year<\/li>\n<li>Present a research poster no later than December 1 of MS4 year<\/li>\n<li>Document at least 250 hours of research activity during medical school (may include work completed during breaks and as research elective hours)<\/li>\n<li>Produce and submit to the review committee a capstone presentation and reflective summary in January of MS 4 year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Required Student Documents&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1588785100855-f496614b-283a&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The student is responsible for submitting the following by September 1 of MS4:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intent to Apply form- <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/office-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2023\/04\/Intent-to-Apply-Form-Updated-April-2023.docx\">template<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The student is responsible for submitting the following by December 1 of MS4:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intent to Apply Form&#8211; due Sept 1 of MS4 (<a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/office-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2023\/04\/Intent-to-Apply-Form-Updated-April-2023.docx\">template<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Project description, 1 page detailing the project, how the distinction will benefit the student, and the role the student has played in the research project<\/li>\n<li>Signed Hours Log (<a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/office-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2023\/04\/MDWRD-Hour-Log-Updated-2023.docx\">template<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Capstone Presentation and Reflective Summary slides (<a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/office-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2025\/10\/MDWDR-Capstone-Presentation-Template.pptx\">template<\/a>)\n<ul>\n<li>The student will present their Capstone Presentation and Reflective Summary to the Student Research Committee in January of MS4.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After the committee reviews all projects, capstone presentations are complete, and GPAs are confirmed, the committee will determine the students who have achieved the distinction.
