Dr. Thomas Hand, MD, Fellowship Director<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The\u00a0University of Texas Health San Antonio Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship\u00a0is an\u00a0Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA)\u2013accredited, one-year training program\u00a0based in the\u00a0South Texas Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.\u00a0University Hospital, our primary training site, serves as the region\u2019s\u00a0only civilian Level I trauma center, providing care for a large and diverse patient population.<\/p>\n

Because of this unique regional role, our trauma service receives patients from\u00a0throughout South Texas, parts of New Mexico, and northern Mexico, resulting in a\u00a0high-volume practice with extensive operative experience. Fellows gain exposure to a wide spectrum of injuries, including\u00a0complex upper and lower extremity fractures, periarticular fractures, and complex pelvic and acetabular trauma. In addition, our institution serves as a\u00a0regional referral center for late post-traumatic reconstruction, musculoskeletal infections, nonunions, and malunions, providing fellows with valuable experience in complex reconstruction.<\/p>\n

The program accepts\u00a0one fellow per year\u00a0and participates in the\u00a0SF Match. In accordance with OTA requirements, the fellow will complete\u00a0at least one research project during the fellowship year. The fellow also plays an active role in\u00a0daily teaching of medical students and orthopaedic residents, contributing to the academic mission of the department.<\/p>\n

Clinical training is provided by\u00a0four core orthopaedic trauma faculty, all of whom are\u00a0trauma fellowship\u2013trained, AO faculty members, and active OTA members. Additional educational opportunities are available through close collaboration with our\u00a0Shoulder and Elbow Service, which has a strong focus on\u00a0upper extremity trauma and complex post-traumatic reconstruction.<\/p>\n

Our fellowship places strong emphasis on the\u00a0multidisciplinary management of the severely injured patient. Fellows work closely with our\u00a0general surgery trauma service, gaining experience in the\u00a0physiology and resuscitation of polytrauma patients\u00a0and the coordinated care required for patients with both orthopaedic and non-orthopaedic injuries.<\/p>\n

Our goal is to train\u00a0knowledgeable, technically proficient, ethical, and confident orthopaedic trauma surgeons\u00a0who are prepared to practice at\u00a0Level I trauma centers.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]The\u00a0University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio\u00a0is an\u00a0Equal Opportunity\/Affirmative Action Employer.
