[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Home<\/a><\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row gap=”35″ el_class=”row far-notso”][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text el_class=”close”]Upon completion of the five-year residency program, our graduates demonstrate competency in the evaluation, diagnosis, clinical and surgical management of disorders of the ear and temporal bone, speech and hearing, diseases of the nose and sinuses, head and neck cancer, maxillofacial trauma, facial plastics and reconstruction, general otolaryngology, laryngeal endoscopic procedures and microsurgery, pediatric otolaryngology. In addition, residents receive training in audiology, cochlear implantation and osseointegrated hearing aids, speech pathology, disorders of swallowing and the vestibular system.<\/p>\n

Located in San Antonio, Texas, our program offers a broad exposure to common and rare ENT disorders and pathology, comprehensive clinical and surgical training in all aspect of the specialty, opportunities to provide underserved care, and a training environment with a large catchment area of South Texas at a Level 1 trauma center. Graduates of our program are openly encouraged to follow their chosen career settings, be it private practice, community hospitals or academic programs. Our graduates are trained to handle any ENT-disorder and demonstrate excellent surgical competency.[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text el_class=”close”]<\/p>\n

Hospitals & Outpatient Clinical Sites<\/h2>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”5\/12″][vc_single_image image=”1883″ img_size=”300×200″][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”7\/12″][vc_column_text]The University Health System<\/a> (UHS), located in the South Texas Medical Center, is the main teaching facility for UT Health San Antonio ENT residents. It is a 650-bed hospital that serves a large urban population and a Level 1 Trauma Center with high clinical and surgical volume. Anticipated for 2024, the $500 million, 300-bed Women’s and Children’s Hospital expansion is currently under construction.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”5\/12″][vc_single_image image=”1884″ img_size=”300×200″][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”7\/12″][vc_column_text]Residents rotate daily at the UT Health Medical Arts and Research Center (MARC) <\/a>for the majority of their outpatient clinical care. Located in the South Texas Medical Center, the MARC emphasizes the subspecialties of head and neck surgery, laryngology, rhinology, facial plastics and reconstructive surgery, and general otolaryngology. The MARC also houses an ambulatory surgery center where faculty and residents operative on a weekly basis (outpatient Laryngology and FPRS cases).[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”5\/12″][vc_single_image image=”1885″ img_size=”300×200″][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”7\/12″][vc_column_text]University Health Center \u2013 Downtown<\/a> Robert B. Green (RBG) Campus and the UHS Main Campus Pediatric<\/a> ENT clinic emphasizes pediatric and general ENT. Located in downtown San Antonio, the RBG clinic provides care to underserved populations and houses a large ambulatory surgery center where residents and faculty operate.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”5\/12″][vc_single_image image=”1886″ img_size=”300×200″][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”7\/12″][vc_column_text]Other affiliated hospitals used for resident clinical rotations include Baptist Health System<\/a> and Methodist Healthcare System<\/a>. Both are located in the South Texas Medical Center blocks away from UHS and the MARC. Residents focus on performing sinus surgery at these locations (in addition to the main UHS).[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”5\/12″][vc_single_image image=”2328″ img_size=”300×200″][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”7\/12″][vc_column_text]The most recent announcement at UT Health San Antonio is the new 144-bed Multispecialty and Research Hospital, located in the South Texas Medical Center just one block from the MARC. Currently under construction and set to open in 2024, the hospital will focus on cancer services and will be directly connected via a walking bridge to the UT Health San Antonio Mays Cancer Center.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”5\/12″][vc_single_image image=”1887″ img_size=”300×200″ onclick=”custom_link” link=”https:\/\/www.southtexas.va.gov\/locations\/directions.asp”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”7\/12″][vc_column_text]The South Texas Veterans Health Care System \u2013 Audie Murphy Division<\/a> is located across the street from UHS and serves as a General Surgery rotation site for PGY1 residents.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Research<\/h2>\n

Resident research at UT Health San Antonio is required for all residents in compliance with ACGME. There are numerous projects ongoing within the department at any given time. Each resident shall have the experience of completing at least one project of sufficient quality that it may be published and presented at a national meeting. Additional research beyond this is encouraged based on resident interest and desire for academic endeavors or career.<\/p>\n

There are three dedicated research months within the five-year program. The dedicated first month takes place in PGY2 year and then a two-month block in PGY4 year. Research is encouraged outside of these dedicated blocks as well. All residents are assigned a faculty mentor to help each resident develop research projects. Support for statistics and research method design is available.<\/p>\n

Meetings & Travel<\/h2>\n

The Department will provide funds for meetings where the resident presents an original clinical or laboratory research paper. In addition, Otolaryngology Departments at our sister institutions within in the San Antonio area sponsor additional courses annually for which travel and registration may be provided, including bronchoesophagology and Temporal Bone Anatomy courses.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2523″ img_size=”Medium”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″]
