{"id":4108,"date":"2024-03-19T09:44:48","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T14:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/pathology\/?page_id=4108"},"modified":"2024-03-20T13:23:15","modified_gmt":"2024-03-20T18:23:15","slug":"cytology-laboratory","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/pathology\/reference-labs\/cytology-laboratory\/","title":{"rendered":"Cytology Laboratory"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\" id=\"wpb-content-root\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]Cytology (also known as Cytopathology) involves examining cells on a microscopic level from bodily tissues or fluids to determine a diagnosis. <span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Our Cytology Laboratory offers the Thin Prep Pap Test. <\/span>Ancillary tests such as HPV and Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, when ordered, \u00a0can be performed on an aliquot from the Thin Prep Pap specimen vial; this testing is performed in our Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory.<\/p>\n<h3>Testing Menu<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Liquid Based, Thin Prep Pap Test (CPT Codes 88142, 88141)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Cytopathology Lab Requisition<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/pathology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2024\/03\/25055-1887-Cytopathology-Lab-Requisition.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cytopathology Lab Requisition Request<\/strong>:<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Specimen Requirements<\/h3>\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong> Laboratory requisition and specimen vial are labeled with a minimum of two patient identifiers.<br \/>\n<strong>B.<\/strong> Laboratory requisition and specimen vial match.<br \/>\n<strong>C.<\/strong> Include all pertinent information to ensure a thorough and complete interpretation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Specimen Source<\/li>\n<li>Date of Last Menstrual Period<\/li>\n<li>ICD-10<\/li>\n<li>Whether patient is pregnant or postpartum<\/li>\n<li>Presence of an IUD<\/li>\n<li>Abnormal cervix<\/li>\n<li>Previous gynecological surgery and procedures<\/li>\n<li>Current hormonal therapy<\/li>\n<li>Chemotherapy<\/li>\n<li>Radiation therapy<\/li>\n<li>Past or present history of cancer<\/li>\n<li>Any other relevant clinical history such as abnormal bleeding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>D.<\/strong> Mid-cycle smears are optimal for cytological evaluation.<br \/>\n<strong>E.<\/strong> Patient has not douched the vagina for 48 hours prior to examination.<br \/>\n<strong>F.<\/strong> Patient has avoided the use of contraceptive creams or jellies for 48 hours prior to examination.<\/p>\n<h3>Sending Sample<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Transport samples in a resealable plastic biohazard bag.<\/li>\n<li>For optimal results, transport the specimens to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the Thin Prep Pap specimen at room temperature or refrigerated (2-8\u00baC).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Request Cytology Supplies<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/pathology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2024\/03\/25055-1979-STRL-SUPPLY-REQUEST-FORM-docxFillable.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>For supplies download STRL Supply Request<\/strong>:<\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]Cytology (also known as Cytopathology) involves examining cells on a microscopic level from bodily tissues or fluids to determine a diagnosis.
