Tauopathies, the most common of which is Alzheimer’s disease, are characterized by the accumulation of tau protein in the brain. Alterations in the nuclear envelope structure have been shown to occur in human Alzheimer’s disease brain tissue and in transgenic fruit fly models of tauopathy. Simon’s research focuses on investigating the effects of these changes on the nucleocytoplasmic RNA export machinery to elucidate possible pathogenic mechanisms of mutant tau protein.
