Laurence Maeyens selected for Jess Hay Chancellor’s Fellowship<\/strong><\/p>\n

Laurence Maeyens, a second-year PhD student in the Integrated Biomedical Sciences Program Biology of Aging Discipline has been selected for the Jess Hay Chancellor’s Fellowship. Laurence is <\/span>co-mentored by James F. Nelson, PhD. and Shangang Zhao, PhD.<\/span><\/p>\n

Established by former University of Texas System Regent Jess Hay, the fellowship recognizes exceptional graduate students whose high-quality research benefits the State of Texas. The fellowship rotates annually among UT institutions benefiting both an academic and health institution each year and this year, the GSBS has the honor of nominating a candidate for this award.<\/p>\n

Laurence’s research investigates the mechanisms underlying the benefits of dietary restriction, sex differences in lifespan with a focus on adipose tissue\u2013mediated aging, and the role of dietary fatty acids in the aging process. In his letter to the UT System Chancellor, Dr. David Weiss shared that Laurence’s work is especially impactful, not only for the health of Texans, but globally, given the growing burden of age-related disease and the urgent need to identify interventions that extend health span.<\/p>\n

Laurence will receive $15,000 award to support his academic and professional development.<\/p>\n
