Interstitial lung diseases (ILD)
Since my pulmonary fellowship training at the University of Michigan under the mentorship of Drs. Fernando Martinez and Kevin Flaherty, I have had a strong clinical, research, and educational interest in interstitial lung diseases (ILD), specifically idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Following a one-year locus tenens at southernmost city in New Zealand, I joined the pulmonary division at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). Since then, I have been focused on the creation and development of a strong ILD program through multiple endeavors. Clinically, these include the founding of the UT Medicine ILD clinic, bimonthly multidisciplinary ILD conference, and ILD-CT protocols in collaboration with radiology. Research efforts include serving as either principal or co-investigator for multiple institutional or industry-sponsored studies, including the landmark ASCEND trial that led to FDA approval of pirfenidone, the first ever drug therapy for IPF in the United States. Educational initiatives include multiple presentations on ILD and IPF to interdisciplinary trainees at all levels as well as other community pulmonary physicians. I also serve as the medical director for the local pulmonary fibrosis support group. All of these concerted endeavors culminated in our selection as a Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation Care Center, or ILD Center of Excellence–1 of 40 recognized centers in the United States.
