Here at UT Health San Antonio, we have a dedication to providing high quality education to pulmonary and critical care fellows with an emphasis on optimizing their training to help them meet their specific career goals. We offer training in essentially all aspects of advanced pulmonary disease and critical care, including lung transplant, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, severe asthma, lung cancer and interventional pulmonology.<\/p>\n

Our critical care program includes training in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as well as advanced training in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) including critical care transesophageal echocardiography.<\/p>\n

Our faculty and fellows are heavily engaged in scholarly activity, including bench research, clinical research, creation of national guidelines, quality improvement, textbook chapters, and clinical vignettes, with over 80 publications in 2021. Fellows will have the opportunity to present at national meetings and attend board review courses.<\/p>\n

Faculty and commitment to education<\/span><\/h2>\n

Our fellowship program offers a diverse faculty committed to our four tenants of trainee education: clinical and patient care, procedural mastery, didactic teaching sessions and research involvement. Our faculty are award-winning leaders in education and have been recognized both nationally and internationally in this respect. Many are also on the boards of national and international clinical guidelines providing trainees with up-to-date training. These include the GOLD guidelines, the IDSA\/ATS guidelines for the management of community-acquired pneumonia in adults and the ARDS Definition Task Force.<\/span><\/p>\n

Program strengths<\/h2>\n

Each fellow will obtain extensive experience in a wide range of invasive procedures including: placement on indwelling pleural catheter (PleurX Catheters), chest tube, hemodialysis catheter , central line, and arterial line. Experience is also given in bronchoscopy with endobronchial\/transbronchial biopsies, EBUS-TBNA, percutaneous tracheostomies, and many other procedures in the realm of interventional pulmonary medicine, whether diagnostic or therapeutic. Each fellow will receive a specialized UT Health SA Pulmonary\/Critical Care Study guide for the boards.\u00a0 Our faculty are the directors of the ‘CHEST Pulmonary Board Review’ each year.<\/p>\n

Fellows will have direct experience with ECMO at our academic affiliated heart hospital. The pulmonary and critical care staff physicians at this location actively cannulate and manage the ECMO circuits. We are one of the few institutions in the country where pulmonary and critical care physicians are so intimately involved with ECMO management. Well-known faculty lead formalized critical care and pulmonary medicine didactics. Each fellow will receive a highly cited and awarded ultrasound-textbook written by one of our faculty, as well as receive a formalized curriculum in bedside ultrasound. Formalized didactics on statistics, abstract\/manuscript writing, presentation skills, and PowerPoint presentation development is a bonus to our program.<\/p>\n
