Restrepo from the Department of Medicine, Pulmonary Division, co-authored a paper recently published by the American Thoracic Society.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diagnosis and Treatment of Adults with Community-acquired Pneumonia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>An Official Clinical Practice Guideline of the American Thoracic Society and Infectious Diseases Society of America<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the more than 10 years since the last American Thoracic Society(ATS)\/Infectious<br \/>\nDiseases Society of America (IDSA) community-acquired pneumonia (CAP)<br \/>\nguideline (1), there have been changes in the process for guideline development, as<br \/>\nwell as generation of new clinical data. ATS and IDSA agreed on moving from the<br \/>\nnarrative style of previous documents to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment,<br \/>\nDevelopment, and Evaluation (GRADE) format. We thus developed this updated<br \/>\nCAP guideline as a series of questions answered from available evidence in an \u201cis<br \/>\noption A better than option B\u201d format using the Patient or Population,<br \/>\nIntervention, Comparison, Outcome (PICO) framework (2).<br \/>\nGiven the expansion in information related to the diagnostic, therapeutic, and<br \/>\nmanagement decisions for the care of patients with CAP, we have purposely<br \/>\nnarrowed the scope of this guideline to address decisions from the time of clinical<br \/>\ndiagnosis of pneumonia (i.e., signs and symptoms of pneumonia with radiographic<br \/>\nconfirmation) to completion of antimicrobial therapy and follow-up chest<br \/>\nimaging. The document does not address either the initial clinical diagnostic criteria<br \/>\nor prevention of pneumonia. CAP is an extraordinarily<br \/>\nheterogeneous illness, both in the range of responsible pathogens and the host<br \/>\nresponse. Thus, the PICO questions we identified for this guideline do not represent<br \/>\nthe full range of relevant questions about the management of CAP but encompass a set of<br \/>\ncore questions identified as high priority by the panel.
