Message From the Chair<\/h2>\n

Welcome to the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at UT Health San Antonio. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, was established as a specialty in the United States in 1938. The UT Health San Antonio department was founded in 1969 and I could not be prouder to serve as Chair of this department with a longstanding history of excellence in training leaders in the field, providing quality and evidence-based care, and producing impactful research.<\/p>\n

We currently have 32 trainees in our 4-year categorical program, one of the largest in the country. We have 20+ faculty who are the essential medical experts in value-based evaluation, diagnosis, and management of neuromusculoskeletal and disabling conditions. We also have an orthotic and prosthetic department and clinic within UT Health Physicians practice.<\/p>\n

Our teaching hospitals include University Hospital, a state-of-the art tertiary care center that is responsible for both adult and pediatric level 1 trauma for all of South Texas, and the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Administration Hospital, which has one of the five Polytrauma Rehabilitation Centers in the nation.<\/p>\n

My desired goal as Chair is to foster a culture of professionalism and inclusion that will empower faculty and trainees to work toward continuous improvement in clinical pursuits, education, research, self-care, and service to the institution and community. I hope as you look at our pages on this website, you share in my pride within this department and can see just a small part of the high quality and comprehensive research, education, and clinical care we are providing to South Texas.<\/p>\n
