University of Texas at San Antonio Trauma and Emergency Surgery Division <\/a><\/h3>\n

The UT San Antonio Trauma and Emergency Surgery Division was created in 1993 to establish a group of dedicated personnel and resources with the goal of improving the care of trauma and acute care surgery patients in Bexar County and the surrounding 22-county region in South Texas. The Division evaluates over 4,500 patients per year and admits over 3000 trauma patients and 1500 acute care surgery patients annually. In addition to providing 24-hour, in-house trauma and acute surgical care, the Division also provides 24-hour, in-house critical care services to patients in the Surgical\/Trauma ICU and in the Transplant ICU at University Hospital.<\/p>\n

University Health System (UHS) \u2013 University Hospital, San Antonio, Texas
\n<\/a><\/h3>\n

University Hospital, a 716-bed acute care hospital, is the primary teaching facility for UT San Antonio, a regional Level 1 trauma center and a leader in organ transplantation. The University Health System employs more than 4,000 people and maintains an operating budget of over $615 million annually. Responsible for a 22-county region of South Texas, the Trauma Center manages 4,500 Level 1 trauma activations and evaluates over 1500 acute care surgery patients per year. All trauma surgeons staffing the UH Trauma Center are active members of the UT San Antonio faculty and closely supervise the team of trauma residents, fellows, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. The Emergency Center at University Hospital is the largest ER in San Antonio, treating an average of 70,000 patients each year.<\/p>\n

Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital<\/a><\/h3>\n

The Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital (ALMMVH), named after the nation\u2019s most decorated World War II hero, is a quaternary care facility affiliated with UT San Antonio. Comprehensive health care is provided through acute medical, surgical, mental health, physical medicine and rehabilitation, geriatric, and primary care services. ALMMVH provides quaternary services including bone marrow transplantation, open-heart surgery, magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography, and as a Level II Research facility, ALMMVH conducts research in the areas of aging, cardiac surgery, cancer, diabetes and HIV.  This facility hosts one of three National Institutes of Health sponsored clinical research centers in the VA and in addition, supports the Geriatric Research, Education & Clinical Center (GRECC), which is a \u201cCenter of Excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), Fort Sam Houston, Texas<\/a><\/h3>\n

BAMC is a modern, state-of-the-art, 450-bed health care facility that provides Level 1 trauma care and the graduate medical education to the military. It is the only Level 1 trauma center in the Department of the Army and one of the two Level 1 trauma centers in San Antonio. The ISR Burn Center serves as the region\u2019s adult burn center and is the sole facility caring for combat burn casualties, beneficiaries, and civilian emergencies within the Department of Defense. Since 2003, the Burn Center has provided care for more than 1200 US military burn casualties and over 3800 civilian burn victims. Fellows rotate on the trauma\/surgical critical care unit as well as the Burn Center and benefit from exposure to advanced modalities such as ECMO. The Emergency Department services over 60,000 visits annually. BAMC serves as the premier medical readiness training platform for both the Army and the Air Force.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″]
