General Surgery residents experience a broad spectrum of general surgery.<\/h2>\n

Academic Surgery<\/h3>\n

Residents will spend most of their time at University Hospital, our primary teaching facility, where they will experience academic surgery in an urban environment at a busy county hospital. But it\u2019s not all trauma and \u2018charity hospital\u2019 work. Residents also get valuable experience working in private practice environments in an urban setting by rotating through local private hospitals, including CHRISTUS Santa Rosa hospitals in San Antonio, St. Luke\u2019s Baptist Hospital in the South Texas Medical Center.<\/p>\n

General Surgery private practice in an urban environment<\/h3>\n

Residents gain private practice experience in General Surgery STAT Surgical Group (John Admire, MD) and thoracic surgery (Gustavo Guajardo Salinas, MD).<\/p>\n

General Surgery private practice in a rural environment<\/h3>\n

Additionally, residents experience private practice in a rural environment by rotating at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels.<\/p>\n

University Hospital<\/a>\"\"<\/i><\/a><\/h3>\n

University Hospital\u2019s Level I trauma center serves a 22-county region of South Texas \u2013 an area of almost 27,000 square miles \u2013 providing comprehensive care to many of the most critically injured patients from Bexar County, South Texas and beyond. UT Trauma faculty and residents staff the trauma center 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

With 713 beds, University Hospital serves the Bexar County population and referred private patients of the Health Science Center faculty. All surgical staff are full-time University of Texas at San Antonio faculty. A Level I trauma center, the hospital provides state-of-the-art health care and spans the range of medical, surgical, obstetrical, and pediatric specialties. Critical care facilities include several specialized intensive care units, including the largest neonatal ICU and a cardiac catheterization laboratory with full intervention and electrophysiology capabilities. Other specialized facilities include a comprehensive endoscopy center for bronchoscopy and gastrointestinal procedures including ERCP, esophageal studies, and advanced non-invasive cardiac imaging. Radiology resources include CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, and interventional facilities. University Hospital is an active center for bone marrow and solid organ transplantation. The Reeves Rehabilitation Center, a comprehensive rehabilitation unit, specializes in the treatment of patients recovering from various neurologic, cardiac, and pulmonary disorders.<\/p>\n

Adjacent to University Hospital is University Health Women\u2019s & Children\u2019s Hospital which opened in late 2024.  The Women\u2019s & Children\u2019s Hospital includes a NICU and Maternity center, designated by the State of Texas as Level IV (the most advanced).  It is the only hospital in the region operating a 24\/7 OB\/GYN urgent care center.<\/p>\n

South Texas Veterans Health Care System<\/a><\/h3>\n

Located across the street from University Hospital, Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital (VA) provides rotations in General Surgery, Peripheral Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Urology, and Endoscopy. All staff physicians are full-time UT San Antonio faculty. Approximately 3,600 elective surgical procedures are performed yearly at the VA. Although a small number of surgical procedures are performed after hours, all trauma patients are referred and treated at University Hospital. All patients are seen pre- and postoperatively in contiguous outpatient facilities. The VA facility provides an older patient population with complex medical and surgical disease processes, although there are ample patients with more common surgical problems such as inguinal hernia.<\/p>\n

Mays Cancer Center<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"MaysAcross the street from University Hospital, the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio is a multidisciplinary, outpatient clinic and research center under the umbrella of UT Health San Antonio. The Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)- designated Clinical Cancer Center. The Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio\u2019s Institute for Drug Development (IDD) provides Phase I clinical trials to patients throughout the world. The IDD is one of a few cancer centers in the U.S. selected by the NCI to receive funding to conduct Phase I clinical trials of anticancer drugs. The IDD works to accelerate the development of anticancer agents through the integration of basic, translational, and clinical research. Recently, the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio announced a new partnership with the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center to bring the latest expertise and protocols to the people of South Texas. The Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio main teaching site for the mammography service and is the location of many interdisciplinary tumor boards.<\/p>\n

Medical Arts and Research Center (MARC)<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"MedicalThe MARC is a state-of-the art ambulatory clinic and the medical home for the 600-person multi-specialty group practice of UT Health. The facilities house clinics for multiple primary care and sub-specialty clinics as well as ambulatory surgery, radiology, and pathology services. A recently expanded radiology reading room has space for multi-specialty radiology coverage. A new nuclear medicine suite with a Time-of-Flight PET scanner was recently added to MARC Radiology. An additional smaller ambulatory clinic (MARC Hill Country) opened in early 2017 approximately 20 minutes north of the medical center and provides many of the same services for the citizens of Boerne, Texas.<\/p>\n

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital \u2013 New Braunfels <\/a><\/h3>\n

The rotation at CHRISTUS New Braunfels provides residents with an opportunity to treat patients from a smaller community than San Antonio. About 45 minutes away from UT San Antonio Health Science Center, in New Braunfels, Texas, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa New Braunfels is a 132-bed hospital, is a full-service Hospital with state-of-the-art technology offering a full scope of specialized services including cardiology services, women’s services, surgical services, rehabilitation services, imaging services, ICU, and 24\/7 emergency services.<\/p>\n

St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital<\/a><\/h3>\n

Located in the South Texas Medical Center, St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital opened in 1978 and offers a beautiful women’s center with all private rooms for new mothers, surgical services, orthopedics, rehabilitation and more. Also offers an accredited Chest Pain Center, Level III neonatal ICU, Brain and Stroke Network.<\/p>\n
